Remember the old Muscletech commercials that featured Mat Duvall? Well, their main character is now dead due a heart attack provoked by an atrial septal defect. Mat Duvall died on February 22, 2013, and was found lied down on the floor in his bathroom.
Do you know what was the worst part about this incident? That he was only 40 years old.
Mat Duvall was born on October 31st, 1972 in Prince William County, VA, USA. His first bodybuilding competiion was in 1991, when the earned the second position at the NPC Teen Virginia. By 2003 when he turned pro after he had won the NPC nationals in the super heavyweight and overall classes, he had already earned lots of fans but also won Mr. Jersey and the NPC Suburban Championships in 1996, and a couple of impressive results at the NPC nationals in the heavyweight class.
February 22 was a sad day for the whole bodybuilding world. We lost a friend, an IFBB pro, but also a good athlete. Although his IFBB PRO career turned out to be a total failure, Mat Duvall never retired completely. In fact, even after changing bodybuilding with professional wrestling – it was mostly a gig, not necessarily a hobby! – he never quit training.
However, his death raises a few question marks for the people involved in the pro league. Does risking to die at a young age worth enough for a few years of looking really good? I should probably stop asking these questions now, as I don’t want to ruin his reputation, but you have to admit that it’s kind of odd how many famous bodybuilders and athletes have died lately due to heart attacks.
Rest in peace, Mat Duvall! You will never be forgotten!
